What is a Classic Americano?
A Classic Americano is a social padel tournament where partners rotate every round. Instead of signing up as a pair, everyone enters alone: each round the schedule hands you a new partner and new opponents, and the points your team scores are added to your personal total. Play enough rounds and the format answers a question fixed pairs never can: who was the strongest player on court today?
That is what makes Americano the default format for club nights and groups of friends. Nobody needs to bring a partner, mixed levels even out because a weaker round with one partner is balanced by a stronger one with the next, and there is no elimination: everyone plays from the first round to the last.
The catch is the schedule. Rotating partners fairly across rounds, courts and sit-outs is a genuinely hard puzzle to do on a whiteboard. How it works

Gather 4 or more players
No fixed pairs needed: everyone enters alone. Eight players is the sweet spot, and multiples of 4 mean nobody ever sits out.
- Step 2
Draw the full schedule
Before the first serve, every round is set: who partners whom, against whom, and on which court. A good draw repeats no partners and balances opponents.
- Step 3
Play each round to points
Every match runs to a fixed target, usually 16, 24 or 32 points. When it ends, both scores are noted: they count for each player individually.
- Step 4
Highest total wins
After the last round, the player with the most points takes the day. Point difference and match wins break any ties.
Scoring and ranking
Americano scoring is deliberately simple: no sets, no games, just points. Both teams keep scoring until the target is reached, so a 14-10 loss still earns you 10 points.
Points per match
Matches are played to a fixed total, commonly 16, 24 or 32 points. The two team scores always add up to that target, for example 15-9 when playing to 24.
Ranking
Players are ranked by total points scored across all their rounds. Every rally matters, even in a match you lose.
Tiebreakers
If totals are level, point difference decides. Still level? Match wins break the tie.
Sit-outs
If the player count is not a multiple of 4, some players rest each round. The schedule rotates rests fairly so nobody sits out more than necessary.
An example: 8 players, 2 courts
This is a real schedule produced by the PadelEasy engine. Seven rounds, and by the end every player has partnered every other player exactly once.
Rounds 4 to 7 continue the rotation until the partner matrix is complete. On a single court the same schedule is played as 14 rounds of one match.

How many players do you need for an Americano?
Four is the minimum. Multiples of 4 (8, 12, 16) are ideal because all players are on court every round. Eight players is the sweet spot: 7 rounds, and everyone partners everyone exactly once.
What if the player count is not a multiple of 4?
The format still works. Each round the surplus players rest, and the schedule rotates those rests fairly so everyone sits out as close to equally as possible.
How is the winner decided?
By total points scored across all rounds. If two players are level, point difference decides, and if still level, the number of match wins breaks the tie.
How many points should a match be played to?
The common targets are 16, 24 or 32 points. Shorter matches mean more rounds fit in your booking; PadelEasy suggests a target that makes the full schedule fit your court time.
What is the difference between Americano and Mexicano?
In an Americano the whole schedule is fixed before play starts and partners rotate so you play with everyone. In a Mexicano each round is drawn from the current standings, so matchups get tighter as the tournament progresses.
How long does a Classic Americano take?
A match to 24 points usually takes 12 to 15 minutes. Eight players on two courts play 7 rounds, which is roughly two hours including rotation. PadelEasy estimates the finish time while you set up, so the schedule fits your booking.
